Print Sizes Guide

What is Dots Per Inch (DPI)?

A printer works by placing small droplets of ink, much smaller than what the eye can see, on the media that is being printed on.

Dots per inch (DPI) refers to the number of individual dots that are printed next to each other within a span of 1 inch (2.54cm).

The higher the DPI measurement of a printer, the better the print will be, since small details will be printed crisper, clearer and with more detail.

What DPI is required to make a good quality print?

This depends to a large extent on the distance the observer is from the print.

Photos, fine art prints, brochures and flyers, where the observer is usually close to the print and observing fine details, are often printed at 300 DPI.  300 DPI is typically the standard resolution people in the printing industry use.

A poster, where the observer may be 2m away, might be printed at a resolution of 100 DPI.  On the other hand, a billboard that is viewed from 10m away will look quite perfect when printed at a resolution of 20 to 50 DPI.  Of course, when looked at from close by, one will be able to that the print becomes a bit fuzzy.

How large should my artwork be to be printed on canvas?

Photo Quality - The print is clear and crisp and reveals fine details.

Excellent - The print is almost as good as a photo for most purposes.

Very good - The print will look good and offer enough detail.

Good - The quality of the print is reasonable.  You will notice that the print is slightly fuzzy when viewed from close by.

Fair - The print is reasonable when viewed from a distance, but may be noticeably fuzzy when viewed from close by.
